A Big Day of Live Music, Markets and Community as SYP Sounds Returns to Yorketown Oval for SA Youth Week

Yorketown Oval is set to fire up with SYP Sounds returning for SA Youth Week, and this year it’s shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

Running from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, April 12, this free event has been brought to life over the past two years by local youth worker Carlee, and it’s quickly growing into something bigger each time. What started as a relaxed day at the oval has built into a full program of music, food and activities, all centred around giving young local talent a stage.

Things kick off with a songwriting workshop led by the legendary Nancy Bates, who’s in town as part of Adelaide Guitar Festival’s regional tour. One of the country’s most talented and respected artists, she’ll run a session from 11am to 12pm on the main stage, open to all ages and experience levels.

From there, the stage is action packed all afternoon. Laura Hill opens with a relaxed acoustic set, before Ella Stacey delivers a fresh, acoustic-pop feel. Opalescence, made up of students from Maitland Lutheran School, showcase a mix of styles and some amazing young talent, followed by Grouse with their easygoing surf-pop vibes straight out of Moonta. Wrapping up the afternoon is Yorketown’s own J-Trex, with an energetic dance set to finish the day on a high.

Off the stage, there’s plenty happening, with lantern making, roving circus performances, a Nharangga language and arts stall, lawn games, face painting, henna, and a game library by Paper or Plastic. There’ll also be market stalls, local services and plenty of food and drink to keep bellies full. The lantern making also feeds into something bigger, with pieces created on the day set to feature in a community lantern parade at Adelaide’s Lime Green Music Festival as part of the Toxic Surf project responding to the algal bloom.

SYP Sounds is the kind of day you send the kids to… then end up staying yourself.
