Our Riverland or the North Pole? Festive Magic takes over Loxton

Abbie Tiller

Loxton Lights Festival’s biggest Fireworks spectacular ever

Each year as Christmas nears, the Riverland town of Loxton transforms into a twinkling spectacle of Christmas merriment, earning its reputation as possibly the most jolly and festive town in South Australia.

The annual Loxton Lights Festival, scheduled for November 25, promises to be the grandest celebration yet, with a dazzling display of lights, activities, and community spirit that rivals even the enchantment of the North Pole.

The festivities kick off on Light Up Day, where the town’s shops extend their hours from 9 am until 8:30 pm, inviting residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the holiday cheer. Children can share their wishes with Santa and revel in the festive atmosphere of twilight markets and food trucks.

The Festive Ferris Wheel offers spectacular views of the Murray River during the day and the magical glow of Loxton’s Christmas Lights at night.

A Christmas Tree Festival at the CWA Hall, will showcase beautifully decorated trees with this year’s theme, ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful.’ The festival, open daily from 11 am to 4 pm until December 17, adds an extra layer of magic to the town.

The pièce de résistance is the Fireworks Spectacular, sponsored by the District Council of Loxton Waikerie, illuminating the night sky at 9 pm on the banks of the River. It marks the official commencement of the Christmas Lights Festival, creating a breathtaking backdrop for the town’s festive charm.

A Riverland icon – Loxton’s Christmas Wonderland continues

However, the magic doesn’t end there. Loxton’s Christmas Wonderland, a cherished tradition since 1985, delights crowds each night at the town oval from 8:30 pm to midnight right up until New Year’s Eve. Originally the dedicated work of the late Peter Manglesdorf, the Wonderland features iconic displays, including a giant Christmas Boot up-cycled from the famous Loxton MardiGras.

Even after Mr. Manglesdorf’s passing in 2022, the tradition lives on. The Loxton North Sports Club, now custodians of the Christmas Collection, ensures that the Wonderland continues to captivate audiences. Whether you’re old and young there’s plenty of fun to be had finding the ten hidden ‘Where’s Wallies’ throughout the display.

The Christmas Wonderland Committee will also host a special White Christmas dinner and Silent Disco on December 9 –  a ticketed event surrounded by the magnificent light display.

Craft markets on December 2 and 16 from 7 pm will also add to the Wonderland experience.

This delightful transformation of Loxton into a festive wonderland is made possible by the dedication of the town’s volunteers, with support from the Council and local businesses.
