Giant Skywhales Set to Soar Above the Riverland in Magical Loxton Sunrise Event

Abbie Tiller

It’s not every day giant inflatable whales drift across the Riverland sky, but that’s exactly what’s happening when Skywhales Across Australia arrives in Loxton this month.

After the weather forecast forced a week-long delay, there’s still a chance to experience Patricia Piccinini’s internationally acclaimed Skywhale and Skywhalepapa as they rise with the sun on Sunday, August 16.

Watch Skywhale and Skywalepapa rise above the Riverland

From around 6am, The Precinct at Loxton Oval will become the best seat in the house as the enormous hot air balloon sculptures slowly inflate before, weather permitting, lifting into the morning sky above the River Murray.

Presented by the National Gallery of Australia, Skywhales Across Australia has captivated audiences around the country, inviting communities to pause for a moment of wonder while experiencing one of Australia’s most recognisable contemporary artworks in a completely unexpected setting.

The free community event includes a Welcome to Country, the chance to watch the skywhales come to life before take-off, plus coffee and refreshments to help shake off the early start.

For those wanting to make a real morning of it, The Precinct is also offering a VIP Breakfast on the Balcony, with front-row seats to the launch, a full breakfast buffet and tea and coffee while the spectacle unfolds.

Watch giant Skywhales float above the Riverland at sunrise in Loxton on August 16, with free family activities across two weekends.

The fun actually begins this weekend, with Arts on Terrace: Sky’s the Limit still going ahead in Loxton on Sunday, August 9. Running from 9am to 1pm along East Terrace, the family-friendly event will feature live entertainment, workshops, exhibitions, activities and plenty of Skywhale-inspired fun.

Art lovers can also meet internationally renowned artist Patricia Piccinini at Loxton Library on August 16, with a free children’s storytime at 11am followed by an artist talk at 1pm.

Whether you’re making a weekend of it or simply setting the alarm for an unforgettable sunrise, this is one event that’s guaranteed to have plenty of people looking up.
