The countdown is on for the Minlaton 150th anniversary celebration

Clear your March 2026 calendar, because something big is brewing on the Yorke Peninsula – and no, we’re not just talking about the commemorative Watsacowie beer (though that’s reason enough to get excited).

Minlaton is getting ready to blow out 150 candles and the party plans are already looking sky-high… literally. Aerobatic displays, parachute drops, fireworks, and a whole lot of Yorke Peninsula flair and hospitality are on the cards for this three-day epic event..

What’s in store

Across the weekend of March 27-29, the town will be going off like a frog in a sock with exhibitions, school reunions, historical tributes, and some good old-fashioned country fun. There’ll be art, music, museum tours, machinery displays, community catch-ups, and a Town Hall Gala featuring an official opening from the Governor. And yes, the Watsacowie commemorative brew will be launched then too.

Kids will love the face painters, George the Farmer, and carnival rides. History lovers can sink their teeth into cemetery tours, oral histories, and a brand new Minlaton coffee table book. And those just chasing a good time will be well looked after with market stalls, food vans, vintage tractors, and live music at the oval.

The whole thing wraps up with a Sunday service and lunch gathering at Minlagawi Gum Flat Reserve, including Nharangga storytelling.

This isn’t just a bush bash

More than your run of the mill town party, this event is about celebrating community and honouring Minlaton’s history, remembering the people and stories that shaped the town, and creating something meaningful for future generations.

There’ll be nods to Minlaton’s legacy as the Barley Capital of the World, its ties to pioneering aviator Harry Butler, and its role as the gateway to Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park.

Locals are keen as beans and ready to party

Planning’s been underway since early 2024, led by a powerhouse crew of volunteers including Natasha Mahar, Kristen Wilson, and Karmel Cook, backed by the Minlaton History Group, the Progress Association, and a long list of passionate locals. Fundraising lunches have sold out. Merch is moving. And together with the “$150 for 150 Years” campaign, they’ve already raised thousands.

Consider this your invitation to the Minlaton 150th Anniversary

A full program will be out in early 2026, so for now, save the date, tell your friends and family, and get ready for a party on Yorkes that will go down in history!
