From Kingoonya to Lameroo – meet the blokes on a mission to down a pint at every SA pub

Abbie Tiller

If you’re heading down to the local, keep your eye out for Wade Fletcher and Tayte Syme – two South Aussie lads on a mission to enjoy a pint in every pub across the state.

With 188 pints already under their belts, these guys are doing it for the kids, risking beer bellies to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

Unsurprisingly, the bright idea came about over a beer at a Kangaroo Island pub, and the workmates quickly began plugging away at downing pints right across SA.

From Bute to Broughton, Kingoonya to Lameroo and the Opal Inn at Coober Pedy, these ambitious lads will stop at nothing to reach their target of getting to all 687 watering holes in the state.

Calling in to the Clare Hotel for a pint.

And with some welcome publicity in recent weeks, including a chat with Karl Stefanovic on the Today Show, they’ve been able to increase their following and ramp up their fundraising efforts, raising $4600 dollars in less than a week for kids with cancer.

“That was always our plan (to raise money for charity), and now we have a bit of a following, we can do that,” Wade, owner of Hills Sustainable Gardens, said.

A bit of “pub”licity goes a long way! They’ve been inundated with requests from people to visit their local pub and can’t wait to see which direction they’ll head next – pulling names out of a West End hat to lead the way.

Wade said he and Tayte were absolutely loving getting out and about to places they’d never even heard of before, with the Historic Overland Corner Hotel right up their with the favourites, and Glendambo and Uraidla boasting the most rustic charm.

“Uraidla was wicked, with old rustic hand tools as bar taps and Glendambo had that real country feel – definitely a pub for the truckies and sheep shearers.”

For this duo, cold beer, a rustic vibe and energetic bar staff are all key ingredients to a good pub, and the patriotic South Aussies try to stick with the local brews.

“We love a Coopers, we’ll drink a craft beer from time to time, but we’ll always go for the locally brewed or SA owned beer.”

So far so good, when it comes to alcohol induced incidents. The only report being a mad-panic toilet dash for Tayte at the Elliston Hotel, after a pub crawl on the Eyre Peninsula.

But fortunately, as they say, behind every successful man is a good woman. Wade’s partner Maddy is the team’s willing “desi driver”, while Tayte could well find love in the front bar of a South Aussie pub.
