Whyalla’s Tanderra Craft Village – The Largest Village Market in South Australia

Melissa Smith

Tanderra Craft Village brings a market fair to Whyalla every month

Originally built by BHP in the early 1940s as a single men’s hostel to house its Whyalla workers, transforming the quarters into a craft village was the brainchild of local resident Leonie Willmott in 1990. Today, Tanderra Craft Village not only showcases the talents of local artisans but also serves as a tourist attraction and a creative space for Whyalla residents.

“Tanderra”, the indigenous meaning for “resting place” transforms into a bustling market as the village fills each month with over 45 stalls. From pottery to jewellery, knits to wooden crafts, specialists and hobby groups, the market promises a unique experience.

Among the star-studded lineup of stallholders is Tania Marie, a passionate cook with an unwavering love of food, Tania creates mouthwatering treats, from muffins and granola to salads and bliss balls. While her goods grace the shelves of a local store, Simply Good Health, the market days promise a special treat with her delicious cupcakes to tantalise your taste buds.

Ethereal Elegance, a fresh face in the Tanderra market world creates handmade products, including shower steamers, crystal-infused essential oils, and bath soaks. A small business dedicated to holistic healing, Talisha crafts each item with love, intention, and care. The perfect gift for Mum’s stocking.

For the Green Thumbs among us, “Just a Few” will return with a botanical extravaganza of luscious plants, lovingly tended to, with a large range on sale to bring a touch of green magic.

An extra dose of festive cheer will be on the cards this weekend too, as Tanderra shells out its Christmas Lolly Trail with a hunt around Tanderra, visiting various stalls and room holders. It’s the perfect way to keep the kids busy while you tick off the Christmas shopping.

Music lovers are in for a treat with the tunes of the Whyalla Singers, Hannah Spigiel and Emma Taylor filling the air, setting the perfect backdrop. And don’t miss the magic unfold with Michael Ahmazing, captivating the audience with his magic tricks and balloon artistry.

Tanderra’s historical significance is not lost amid the market atmosphere. Check out the Tanderra Single Men’s Quarters Museum and Steel Cap Gallery which offers a glimpse into the past. But if that’s not your style, try your hand at a round of mini-golf or giant chess game.

There’ll also be a BBQ, Café, and Food Vans to fill your bellies as you wander the goods on offer.

Tanderra Markets is open both days over the weekend and promises something for everyone.
