Hahndorf Christmas Village transforms the main street with lights, markets and a full weekend of festive fun
If your Christmas spirit is running on empty, the Hahndorf Christmas Village will top you up faster than your mums pav on Christmas day. It’s definitely not a place for Grinches as Hahndorf lights up from December 12 to 14, turning the whole main street into a glowing run of markets, musicians and festive cheer.
The Main Street will literally glow from 6pm each night, with the trees wrapped in lights and the whole strip covered in displays and community-made decorations thanks to the Reimagine Christmas crew.
Down at Alec Johnston Park, the Gathered Christmas Design Market will be in full swing with more than 100 South Australian makers, food trucks and festive stalls all weekend. Over on the Hahndorf Academy lawns, there’ll be workshops, entertainment, a DJ, kids’ activities and plenty of delicious treats from Comida and Ambleside Distillers. You can enjoy the full German-inspired Christmas spread too – Glühwein from Eis Haus, bratwurst, pretzels, sweets, coffee, wine and a few seasonal extras.
Santa will be outside Comida from 3pm to 6pm each afternoon for photos and Christmas wish lists that might blow the North Pole’s budget, while roaming musicians and performers will wander Main Street, keeping the carols and Christmas cheer flowing. More than 150 local shops will stay open late each night if you’re still hunting for last-minute gifts, or better still, finding a little something for yourself.
There’s also gift wrapping by the Lions Assistance Dogs team, a Reindeer Trail starting at Bracegirdle’s, and live music across the weekend from the Hahndorf Town Band and other musos. It’s Christmas, Hahndorf style.
With more than 40,000 people rolling into the Christmas Village in previous years, public transport is the safest bet unless you’ve got a sleigh handy.
