Sold-Out Halloween Launch Kicks off New Era for Gladstone Gaol
Back in July, we told you one of SA’s iconic old gaols was preparing to open its gates again.
Now, with Halloween creeping up, there’s no better way to reopen a 145-year-old former prison than by waiting until dark and seeing what might still be hanging around.
Gladstone Gaol will officially welcome visitors back on Saturday, October 31, when Lantern Ghost Tours launches its new Ghosts, Crime & Paranormal Encounters experience.
And apparently plenty of people are keen to get behind those walls – with the Halloween opening already sold out.
Inside Gladstone Gaol After Dark
But if you missed out, you won’t have to wait until next Halloween to get your chance.
Tours will continue on Saturday nights after October 31, giving visitors the chance to wander through the cells of the old prison after dark.
The 90-minute experience takes visitors through seven areas of the historic gaol, delving into true crime, documented history and the unexplained happenings reported within its walls over the years.
Built in 1881, Gladstone Gaol operated as a prison until 1975 and also served as a military detention barracks during World War II.
It later became a tourism attraction, but has been closed since 2022.
More Than Just Ghost Tours
Earlier this year, Lantern Ghost Tours was appointed to breathe new life into the State Heritage-listed site.
And the ghost tours are just the first taste of what’s to come.
Longer-term plans include historical tours, a café and accommodation in one of the former Senior Warden’s residences, with other visitor experiences also being explored.
But first, there’s the small matter of opening the gates on Halloween night – inside an old gaol where visitors over the years have reported footsteps, whispers, cold spots and the distinct feeling they weren’t alone.
The first Gladstone Gaol Ghosts, Crime & Paranormal Encounters tours will run on Halloween, before continuing on Saturday nights.
Whether you’re a believer, a sceptic or just curious enough to step through the gates after dark, Gladstone Gaol is back – and there’s plenty of other attractions worth exploring in the region.
