Local Clare Valley bakery shoves all sorts in a pie case and comes out on top

A Clare Valley bakery has proved nothing’s off the table when it comes to pies, taking home a swag of medals at the Great Aussie Pie Comp 2025.

The Little Red Grape at Sevenhill cleaned up with nine golds and three silvers, including a win in the Gourmet Seafood Pie category for their Fish & Potato Bake Pie – the third year in a row they’ve topped the nation.

Among the golden haul were some eyebrow-raising flavours – Cheesy Cauliflower Pie, Thai Chicken Satay Pie, Thai Prawn Satay Pie, and even a Sausage Sizzle Pie. Turns out, if you can eat it off a plate, these bakers can wrap it in pastry and win gold for it.

The team also nailed the classics, with their Plain Sausage Roll and Plain Pasty both earning gold medals.

Apprentice baker Hollie made headlines of her own, placing third in the national apprentice category and scoring gold with her Cheesy Cauliflower Pie. Not bad for someone still learning to not burn her fingers.

The Great Aussie Pie Competition has been running since 1989 and attracts entries from bakeries across the country each September at Fine Food Australia. It’s considered the number one national pie and sausage roll competition – and this year, the Clare Valley’s pastry crew showed they’ve got the recipe for success!
