Results in for ‘Wotif Aussie Town of the Year 2024’ and some of Greater SA’s favourite destinations made the cut
Everybody’s favourite outback town, Coober Pedy, and the beautiful Barossa town of Tanunda have secured Top Ten spots in this year’s ‘Wotif Awards’. And to top it off, our adopted SA cousin, Broken Hill, came in at second place!
Famously featured in the iconic 1994 Australian movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Broken Hill offers more than just red dirt and desert. Enjoy some contemporary artworks by leading Aboriginal artists at the oldest regional gallery in NSW – the Broken Hill City Art Gallery. For the outdoorsy type, visit the ruggedly beautiful landscapes, just outside of Broken Hill in Mutawintji National Park. And if you take a trip in September, you’ll be able to take part in the ‘Broken Heel Festival’, a five-day extravaganza of disco, drag and divas in the desert. This year will be an unmissable party with the celebration of 30 years since Priscilla burst onto our screens.
Tanunda hit the list at number six of Wotif’s top Aussie destinations. Known as the ‘red heart’ of the Barossa, Tanunda is a wine lovers’ ultimate destination featuring some of the best wineries in the world. From iconic heritage buildings to the beauty of the surrounding landscape and vineyards, Tanunda also boasts a strong European history and an exquisite array of local eateries to enjoy.
The Opal capital of the world, Coober Pedy rounded out the top ten. Much of the town’s treasures – like its opal – can be found underground. Visitors can explore underground houses, churches, museums, and even shops and hotels. Above ground, you’ll find the world’s largest displays of opals and you can even try your hand at ”noodleling” through permitted mine areas to discover your own gemstones. Home to SA’s last drive-in, sit back and enjoy a movie or take an outback tour in a 4WD to one of the many surrounding natural wonders. The outback town celebrates an intriguing history and unique way of life – a must-visit for explorers of all ages.
The 2024 Wotif Aussie Town of the Year Awards is based on data that measures each destination’s accommodation quality, affordability, traveller satisfaction and trending traveller interest on Wotif.com in 2023 when compared with data from 2022.
So what are you waiting for? With the upcoming school holidays and Easter long weekend looming, it’s the perfect time to plan a South Aussie getaway to one of our nation’s top-voted destinations!
