The Lady and The Legend – two ocean icons combine

Abbie Tiller

Brindabella and The One And All invite you on an adventure to the York Peninsula

South Australia is not only home to some of the most pristine sailing waters and beautiful coastlines, but home to two of Australia’s most iconic and charterable sailing vessels – the tall ship, One and All, and the Sydney to Hobart winning maxi yacht, Brindabella.

These iconic vessels have come together to create a unique weekend voyage that provides an amazing contrast of sailing experiences, in conjunction with the Yorke Peninsula Saltwater Classic on April 13 and 14.

Imagine jumping on board and being swept up in the grandeur and worldly charm of an authentic tall ship, as well as the speed and excitement of a true sailing thoroughbred. The magical new experience is affectionately named “The Lady and The Legend”.

The voyage caters for up to 30 guests, perfect for individuals, couples or groups, taking off from the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron at Outer Harbor on Saturday April 13, sailing to Stansbury and Port Vincent, where both vessels will be the showcase of the Saltwater Classic –  a biennial event celebrating the great traditions of boat building, vessel types and rich maritime history.

On the waters of Gulf St Vincent, both vessels will provide enough morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea to keep salty sailors sustained, and after gracing Stansbury’s Oyster Bay with their splendour, they’ll join a sailing flotilla with local boats of all vintages and sizes on a scenic sail to Port Vincent, where they’ll drop anchor for the night.

At anchor guests will come together for pre-dinner drinks onboard the One And All, followed by the Captain’s Dinner and overnight accommodation at sea.

After a hearty sailor’s breakfast on Sunday, comes another action-packed day of sailing. Guests will swap vessels and experience the difference between the grandeur of the One and All and the sailing thoroughbred. The Yorke Peninsula Festival will continue with the feature event, Port Vincent Parade of Sail, before it’s all hands on deck to sail back into port aboard the Lady and the Legend.

This spectacular sailing experience is just one of the offerings these two grandeurs of the sea have in store for 2024. Brindabella, the beautifully appointed 80 foot Maxi Yacht offers breathtaking & unforgettable sailing adventures, from day adventures, to private charters, overnight expeditions, luxury escapes and a School and Youth Development Program.  This Easter, the Maxi is offering two ticketed sailing adventures leaving Port Vincent on Easter Sunday and Monday. Brindabella, affectionately known as the “Peoples Maxi” is Australia’s most famous maxi yacht – and for good reason.

In 1997 she won Line Honours in the Sydney to Hobart and came in at second place four times, making her Australia’s most favourite underdog.  At one stage, she held every race record out of Sydney and the iconic People’s Maxi still holds the race record for a conventionally balloted yacht, completing the 1999 Sydney to Hobart, in a history-making 1 day, 20 hours, 46 minutes and 33 seconds. Not bad for a vision, believed to be conceived on the back of a beer coaster!

The One and All has been bringing people together since the early 1980’s, when a group of young volunteers set out to provide opportunities of self discovery and self development, by building a replica based on an 1850’s Brigantine. The One and All was first commissioned in 1987 and has been sailing ever since joining the First Fleet re-enactment in 1988.

The iconic tall ship offers some incredible experiences for all ages, including a 5-day Youth Adventure Voyage and other unforgettable voyages as well as Twilight Sails and Tall Ship Cruises from Port Adelaide.  Click here for all the details.
