Kangaroo Island has been crowned as one of the world’s top travel destinations in Lonely Planet’s 2024 Top Regions Hotlist.

Gracefully claiming second spot, surpassing renowned locations like Tuscany in Italy, it’s not just Lonely Planet that rates our little island in the south as a world leading travel destination. Earlier this year, The New York Times named Kangaroo Island in its top ten places to travel with Stokes Bay holding the 2023 title for Australia’s Best Beach.

As the only Australian destination featured on the list, this recognition propels Kangaroo Island to worldwide acclaim. With its pristine beaches meeting abundant wildlife and local produce being a culinary delight, there’s no secret why KI has hit the list of global travel destinations.

“We know Kangaroo Island is one of the best destinations in the world, and now, it’s official,” exclaims Zoe Bettison, Minister for Tourism.

Lonely Planet’s Hotlist, which aims to inspire travellers to plan their 2024 getaways, shines a spotlight on trending travel sectors such as eco-tourism and slow travel. Nominations poured in from Lonely Planet’s community, international contributors, and publishing partners. A panel of travel experts then evaluated each destination, considering factors like unique experiences, sustainability, and the ‘wow’ factor.

“As one of the world’s best travel destinations – and the only one in Australia to make the list – this accolade will help put Kangaroo Island, and South Australia, on the must-visit list for travellers across the globe,” adds Zoe Bettison.

The global recognition coincides with the eagerly awaited reopening of the Southern Ocean Lodge, a $55 million endeavour set to welcome guests in early December. This upscale resort promises to offer visitors an unforgettable experience surrounded by the island’s natural beauty.

Adding to the island’s allure, 2024 brings a multi-million-dollar development, The Cliffs Kangaroo Island, a world-class golf course that promises to draw golfing enthusiasts from around the world.

“With new major attractions, it is the perfect time for the region to get this global recognition and for visitors worldwide to start planning their trip,” said Zoe Bettison.

“On top of all the wonderful natural attractions on the island, it has also become a producer of premium food and beverages in recent years which adds to the visitor experience,” notes Leon Bignell, emphasising the island’s growing culinary reputation.

The island has become not only a sanctuary for nature lovers but a culinary delight with its premium offerings of food, wine, and spirits.

So there you have it folks – our beloved KI has hit the big time. If you haven’t been, you’d better get there before the rest of the world does!
