Ardrossan celebrates 150th with a three-day party

Abbie Tiller

Celebrations continue on the Yorke Peninsula, and this weekend it’s Ardrossan’s turn to throw a three-day party to commemorate 150 years of the historic coastal port.

A big weekend of entertainment has been put together by a dedicated volunteer committee, with a program sure to please past, present and future members and friends of the community.

The South Australian Country Women’s Association (SACWA) will be churning out their famous scones on Friday morning, following a very special gesture where they will be offering flowers to be placed at the Ardrossan Cemetery, to honour past community members.

Friday night, a sell-out Gala event will be held at the Soldiers Memorial Hall to officially open the celebrations, while anyone who missed out or is spending the night with the kids, can take a picnic blanket down to Apex Park and catch Tom and Jerry on the big screen, complete with free popcorn!

A variety of vehicles and floats will take part in a street parade on Saturday morning at 10am, before everyone can gather to enjoy the Town Fair. There will be market stalls and food vans and the local cafes and stores will be open all day. A ceremony around midday will see the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on the corner of First and Fourth streets, before a special Commemorative Quilt is unveiled at 12.30 at the Hall.

The afternoon will include a variety of demonstrations, from blacksmithing to circle dancing, amusement rides, face-painting, a petting zoo and jumping castle. Historical displays will be on show at the school gym, with tours of the school as well as Native Grassland Tours.

Legendary local band, The Swamp Donkeys will headline Saturday night’s party at the town oval, supported by local musicians, Caleb Raymond, ‘Fermby’ Lodge and students from Ardrossan Area School.

The jam-packed weekend will continue on Sunday with the SIMEC Family Picnic at APEX Park neary the town jetty, where there will be food stalls, local winemakers, Emoyeni Wines, Sunny Hill Distillery, family friendly lawn games, live entertainment and a Tug-O-War competition.  Horse rides, kite display and the veteran and classic cars display will also add to the huge list of things to see and do.
