Jumpstart Your Career in Grains Research at Hart

If you’re keen to kickstart your career in grains research, this is your chance.

Hart Field-Site Group’s Regional Internship in Applied Grains Research is back, with applications opening tomorrow, January 15. Set in the beautiful Clare Valley, this fully paid, 12-month program was originally filled in September 2024, but a change of plans for the successful candidate has reopened this exciting opportunity.

Hart Field-Site Group (Hart) is a not-for-profit organisation driven by the mission to deliver cutting-edge research and practical solutions for growers. Renowned for its independent trials and field demonstrations, Hart is South Australia’s premier cropping field site, making this internship a golden ticket for anyone passionate about Ag Science.

Hart’s 2022 intern, Declan Anderson (left), introduces project collaborators and Hart Field Day guest speakers Dr. Glenn McDonald, University of Adelaide (centre), and Kaidy Morgan, Hart’s 2023 research intern (right).

The program offers hands-on experience in key areas such as weed control, crop nutrition, soil fertility, and drought resilience, providing a well-rounded understanding of the challenges and innovations in cropping systems. Interns will work closely with Hart’s Research & Extension Manager, Rebekah Allen, while collaborating with leading researchers, consultants, and industry experts. The internship also includes time with SARDI researchers at the Waite campus, alongside opportunities to participate in field days, workshops, and industry events. These experiences help interns build their professional networks and open doors to exciting future career opportunities.

Participants will receive mentorship and training in areas like project management, communication, and goal-setting, ensuring they’re well-prepared for future research roles. It’s also an excellent stepping stone for further study, including Honours or PhD programs.

To be eligible, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science (or a similar field) obtained within the last five years. You’ll need the right to work in Australia, a current Australian driver’s license, and a genuine passion for grains research. This internship isn’t just a job – it’s a pathway to fast-track your career while helping to build capacity in the grains sector.

Supported by Hart, the South Australian Grain Industry Trust (SAGIT), SA Drought Hub, and SARDI, this program is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to gain practical skills, build a professional network, and work in the “Hart” of South Australia’s agricultural innovation.

Applications close on February 5, at 5pm ACDT. To find out more about the intern program, visit the Hart website at www.hartfieldsite.org.au and check the Careers section under About Us.
