Leafy advice and family fun at SA Autumn Garden Festival
Dig out your gumboots and sharpen those secateurs – SA Autumn Garden Festival is back, blooming bigger and better than ever!
On Sunday, April 6, the Clare Showgrounds will be transformed into a garden lover’s wonderland, with loads of stalls sprouting up to deliver everything from plants and gardening tools to sculptures and expert advice. And if your thumbs are more brown than green, don’t worry, because some of Australia’s top gardening gurus will be on hand to help!
Costa and a beaut line-up of local green thumbs will be dishing the dirt
Costa Georgiadis, everyone’s favourite bearded gardener from the ABC’s Gardening Australia, will be leading the charge alongside a lineup of plant-loving pros. On the pans with a cooking demonstration will be Fair Food Activist and CEO of Coculturelab, Rebecca Sullivan. David Long will have all the tips to help your lawn look so lush that you’ll be the envy of your neighbours. Matt from Inglewood Bees will have the buzz on backyard hives, while the queen of sustainability, Paulie Calaby, will show you how to design a drought-hardy landscape. You can also learn to prune fruit trees like a pro, discover the secrets to divide and care for irises, master the art of wicking beds, and to keeping your soil so healthy the worms will think they’ve checked into The Ritz. And the best part is that it’s all included in the price of your ticket!
After soaking in all that leafy advice, there’s still plenty to get stuck into – especially for the little ones! The FREE kids’ area is bursting with fun, hands-on activities from planting seeds in compostable cups to creating their own nature crowns, they can also build their own “Costa the Garden Gnome” scarecrow, repurposing old clothes into quirky creations.
When it’s time to refuel, you can’t go past a mouthwatering, locally sourced lamb roll – a festival favourite amongst the many culinary delights available. The community-run event is the perfect way to dig into the season, and as the only Waste Away event in the region, everything from food scraps to packaging is either composted, recycled or reused. No landfill, no unnecessary waste – just a full-circle, eco-friendly festival where everything returns to the earth.
There is even a “Shop and Drop” area where you can creche your purchases and enjoy the festival before collecting them to return to your car.
Gates open from 10am to 3pm so bring your plant wish list, your garden trolley and get ready for a blooming good day out!
