The inaugural George the Farmer brick-and-mortar store officially opens this weekend

The George the Farmer concept store will host a free grand opening celebration set in Penola, the hometown of creator Simone Kain and you can bet your boots that a bunch of eager little farmers will be excited to pay a visit!

This promises to be a day filled with fun for budding young farmers and their families, with a lineup of activities, catering to all ages. From George’s educational yellow-brick road stations to mini tractor and horse-cart rides, face painting, giveaways, and an opportunity to meet and greet George the Farmer himself! Food, wine, and more will be available throughout the day while celebrating Penola’s home-grown farming character.

The idea behind George the Farmer is to spark children’s interest in agriculture and teach them about the origins of their food and fibre through a range of creative ways. With various resources spanning picture storybooks, musical paddock-to-plate videos, virtual reality experiences, live performances, and curriculum-aligned educator’s materials for Foundation to Year 4, George the Farmer is on a mission to entertain and educate.

The story of George the Farmer begins with Penola local, Simone Kain, the founder, author, and mind behind this agricultural educational brand, who embarked on a quest in 2012. Struggling to find farm-related content for her farm-loving son, George, Simone took matters into her own hands and birthed George the Farmer in 2014 as an interactive story app.

Since its beginning, the George the Farmer universe has expanded far beyond storybooks, delving into other mediums such as music, live performances, and engaging, curriculum-aligned resources for educators. Currently boasting a collection of 13 George the Farmer books, each story tackles different facets of farming life, presenting challenges and solutions that mirror the realities of agriculture. The aim is to entertain, educate, and ignite curiosity among children and adults alike.

Through these engaging materials, the team aims not only to educate children about the origins of their food and fibre but also to contribute to global food security and make a meaningful impact on rural communities.

Recognised nationally and internationally, Simone and the George the Farmer brand have won numerous awards for innovation and contribution to agricultural education. With accolades like ‘2017 Agrifutures Rural Women’s Award National Runner-up’ and ‘NAB Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards Rural Entrepreneur of the Year,’ George the Farmer and Simone’s vision of agricultural education stands as a testament to her impactful creation which is definitely something to celebrate.
