When was the last time you tried something for the first time?
That’s the question libraries across South Australia are asking as Firstival returns throughout July, encouraging people to discover a new hobby, learn a new skill or simply meet some new faces.
With hundreds of free and low-cost events happening across the state, regional libraries are once again throwing open their doors with a packed program of hands-on experiences.
Regional Libraries Are Getting Creative
Whether you’re keen to get crafty, learn a practical skill or simply spend a few hours doing something different, there’s something happening across regional South Australia.
In the Clare Valley, adults can slow down with a free mindfulness colouring session complete with morning tea.
Young people aged 9 to 17 on Kangaroo Island can create their own signature perfume at Kingscote Library, while budding artists in Roxby Downs can explore printmaking with professional artist Simone Tippett.
If you’ve always wanted to learn a new craft, Kingston is hosting a beginner-friendly granny square crochet workshop, Moonta is teaching people how to paint their own watercolour postcards, and Port Broughton families can colour and decorate their own kite before taking it home.
Book lovers haven’t been forgotten either, with Cleve, Port Neill and the Cleve Hotel joining forces for a “Bring a Friend” book club designed to welcome new readers into the fold.
Why Firstival Is About More Than Just Books
There are also opportunities to try metal embossing in Port Lincoln, discover local history, get creative with hands-on art workshops, learn practical skills and enjoy community activities in libraries stretching right across the state.
Now in its fourth year, Firstival has become a statewide celebration of learning, encouraging people of every age to rediscover what their local library has to offer.
Many events are free, while others cost only a few dollars, making it a cheap and cheerful way to try something completely new.
Whether it’s your first painting, your first craft workshop, or your first visit to the library in years, July is the perfect time to give something different a go.
