Regional South Australia wages a war on waste

Five Regional Councils in South Australia, including Barossa, Naracoorte-Lucindale, City of Whyalla, Yorke Peninsula, and Port Pirie, are joining the war on waste, by taking part in the nationwide Garage Sale Trail.

Created by two Sydney mates with a passion for the environment, the Aussie not-for-profit social enterprise, backed by nearly 100 Australian councils, will take place over two weekends from November 11 and 19, with garage sales popping up all over the regions, as part of Australia’s festival of pre-loved stuff – and it’s not too late to join in!

Registrations remain open until the event begins, with Councils encouraged to use the Garage Sale Trail platform to unite their communities, encourage neighbourhood relationships and promote a shift towards the repurposing of unwanted items.

Did you know that Australia generated 75.8 mega tonnes of waste last year?

What’s a mega tonne you ask? Who knows? But 75.8 mega tonnes is equivalent to 471 Sydney Opera Houses and we all know what one of those is.

This staggering statistic, teamed with Australia ranking among the top most wasteful nations in the world is a sobering thought.

So instead of stuffing your unwanted goods into a wheelie bin, you could make some cold hard cash. And if you’re more of a shopper than a seller, garage sales are a mecca for savvy, smart bargain hunters.

Yorke Peninsula Council is again bringing the Garage Sale Trail to the stunning coastal region, encouraging residents to sell, shop, and learn about recycling and the circular economy.

“Buying second-hand means you can nab quality items like designer clothes, furniture, cookware, vinyl, kids stuff and tools for a fraction of the retail price,” Mayor Braund said, adding that “it’s fun, social and every dollar stays right here in the community.”

Whyalla City Council embraced the Garage Sale Trail three years ago and has since seen 30,000 kilograms of products sold and reused, generating nearly $80,000 for locals – that’s an average of $663 per seller.

Join the Garage Sale Trail

To get on board and join the festival of pre-loved stuff with thousands of others, the crew at Garage Sale Trail makes it super easy with free registration, how-to guides, promotional resources, and even touch-free PayPal and QR code payments.

Also included is a series of free online talks featuring an all-star cast of experts and familiar faces sharing their sustainable living tips that are kind on the planet and pockets.

And who knows… You might bag yourself a bargain like the fella in the US who bought a bowl for 45 dollars, which ended up being a rare Chinese artefact worth more than half a million dollars. Talk about someone’s trash being another’s treasure!
