Get ready to go full Cornish at Kernewek Lowender

The Copper Coast, at the top of Yorke Peninsula, is set to come alive with the sights, sounds, and flavours of Cornwall as Kernewek Lowender, the world’s biggest Cornish festival, returns from May 12 to 18. Held across the “Copper Triangle” towns of Kadina, Moonta, and Wallaroo, this biennial festival is a vibrant tribute to the region’s proud Cornish heritage. With a jam-packed program of cultural events, music, food, and family-friendly fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

It’s a time when the region is abuzz with the sounds of traditional Cornish music, the aroma of freshly baked pasties, and the sight of maypole dancers filling the streets with colour and energy.
One of the major highlights is the much-loved cavalcade of cars and motorcycles, more than 500 vintage and classic vehicles will parade through the streets, drawing thousands of spectators.

Meanwhile, the maypole and furry dance in Moonta will have the whole town twirling in traditional style, with dancers of all ages coming together to celebrate their Cornish roots.
Another must-see is the emotional and historical Dressing of the Graves, a touching tribute that honours early Cornish settlers by recounting their life stories and laying
flowers at their resting places. The stirring sounds of the Cornish Choir will fill the air, adding to the sense of nostalgia.

Food lovers will be in for a treat with plenty of traditional Cornish fare on offer. Whether it’s a piping hot Cornish pasty straight from the oven or a feast of Cornish- inspired delicacies, there will be no shortage of delicious options.  Many of the local pubs and eateries will be joining in on the fun, serving up special menus featuring
hearty Cornish favourites. And of course, no Cornish festival would be complete without a locally brewed ale to wash it all down.

For those who love arts and culture, the festival boasts an impressive range of artisan markets, exhibitions, and performances. Browse through handcrafted wares, sample locally made treats and take home a unique souvenir celebrating Cornish culture.

Families will find plenty to do, with fun-filled activities like panning for “Gold”, Cornish storytelling sessions, and language workshops teaching a few key phrases in Kernewek, the Cornish language.

Whether you have Cornish ancestry or simply enjoy a lively cultural festival, Kernewek Lowender is an event that brings history to life. So, grab your flat cap, put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to celebrate all things Cornish – this is one festival you won’t want to miss.
