53 days off work for the price of 20 folks!

Are you one of those people that like to take a sickie to sit on the hill sinking red tins at the cricket or drop the line in on a pearler fishing day? If more days off seems like a good deal to you then listen up….
In 2025, employees in SA can take 53 days off with just 20 days of annual leave by strategically booking their holidays around public holidays. This is possible by taking advantage of long weekends created by public holidays.

Bevo’s tips for more time off

  • Plan around public holidays: Employees can maximize their annual leave by booking holidays around public holidays.
  • Take advantage of long weekends: Employees can take advantage of long weekends created by public holidays.
  • Combine annual leave with public holidays: Employees can combine annual leave with public holidays to create extended breaks.
South Aussies don’t have to wait long to reap the benefits either. The Australia Day public holiday is on Monday, January 27th in 2025, so if you book off the previous week from Monday January 20th – Friday January 24th, you’ll get a total of 10 days off between Saturday January 18th and Monday January 27th.
For tennis fans you could use this time to go on a road trip or jump on a plane to Melbourne for the second week of one of the biggest sporting events in Australia, the Australian Open.
Giddy up, on Monday 10th of March it is one of SA’s biggest horse racing meetings, the Adelaide Cup, which means another long weekend and another day you don’t have to use up your annual leave.
With Easter bunny arriving a month later it is not just the chocolate and hot cross buns to get excited about, but you guessed it….more time off!
You could secure another 10 days off with some similar planning around the Easter weekend if you take four days off during the week of Monday April 14th – Friday April 18th. Including the previous weekend, this will give you 10 days off From Saturday April 12th – April 21st.
This could be a great time to jump in your caravan or campervan and go on that long-overdue trip to one of the many regions of South Australia.
By June you’ll be needing another break, and thanks to the King’s Birthday long weekend you can. If you use some annual leave for the week of Monday June 2nd – Friday June 6th, you’ll get a total of 10 days off between May 31st and June 9th.
Oh, and just a reminder, there are two more public holidays in 2025 we haven’t mentioned yet. Anzac Day is on Friday 25th April and Labour Day falls on Monday, October 6.
You can finish 2025 with a bang and potentially a 16-day holiday and by using only seven days of annual leave.

Here’s how it works…

This year, Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26. By taking seven days of leave (Monday, December 22 to Wednesday, December 24; Monday, December 29 to Tuesday, December 30 and Friday, 2 January) you can nab a 16-day break from Saturday, December 20 through to Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Did I mention red tins on the hill, well now’s the perfect time to book that time off because it doesn’t get much bigger than this, England are here to take on the Aussies in the biggest rivalry in cricket, The Ashes.
The Adelaide Oval will be hosting the third test against the Poms from December 17 to 21.
