Whyalla to host SA Mine Rescue Competition

Abbie Tiller

South Australia’s trained Mine Rescuers will put their skills to the test in October, when Whyalla hosts SA Mines Emergency Response Competition (SAMERC).

Aimed at providing practical training experience in Mine Rescue Operations, it is the first time the competition has been held away from a remote mine site

Hosted by Middleback Ranges mining company, SIMEC, the “ground-breaking” event will see seven teams compete, including one from SIMEC Mining. Teams will be competing for the SAMERC Perpetual Trophy, with trophies also awarded to the winners of each event along with Best Team Captain and a SAMERC Chairman’s Award for the team that best demonstrates the values of the competition.

The City of Whyalla Council has thrown its support behind the event as a premium sponsor, stating the competition will provide amazing entertainment as well as an economic and social boost to the City.

SAMERC is designed to test the skills and knowledge of teams who would be called on to respond to a mine emergency and give emergency service personnel the opportunity to respond to life-like scenarios and build on skills.

“We look forward to working with the Council to make this one of the best and most spectacular events seen in South Australia … right here on our doorstep for everyone to come and watch,” said SIMEC Mining Manager of Health and Safety, Steve Player

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone said SAMERC would have major benefits for the city, with the event to see an influx of emergency response workers and an expected surge in visitors to watch this exciting competition over three days.

“We have proven on many occasions that Whyalla is willing, able and enthusiastic about hosting these sorts of events,” Mayor Stone said.

“This competition will be no different, with plenty of action and entertainment that you just wouldn’t, or couldn’t, see in any other city.

“This will be a unique event that will be a great experience for our community, so we are proud to partner in bringing it to Whyalla.”
