Mining regions shine among South Australia’s best destinations

South Australia’s best tourism towns have been announced at the 2024 South Australian Top Tourism Town Awards, with a couple of quaint mining towns in the spotlight, as well as one of the State’s favourite coastal country towns.

The once-booming mining town of Burra, in the Mid North, received a double delight, awarded 2024 SA Tiny Tourism Town as well as the People’s Choice Award, determined through a public voting process.

Representing the outback, South Aussie’s gem, Coober Pedy, was named winner of the Small Tourism Town Award, and Fleurieu favourite, Victor Harbor took out the overall Tourism Town of the Year for the second consecutive year.

The Top Tourism Town Awards celebrate towns that provide incredible visitor experiences while demonstrating a shared commitment to developing tourism in their respective regions.
The program is delivered annually by South Australia’s peak tourism body, Tourism Industry Council South Australia (TiCSA).

TiCSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Shaun de Bruyn, commended the winners and entrants. “We extend our congratulations to the winners and participants of the 2024 South Australian Top
Tourism Town Awards for enhancing the vibrancy and appeal of our state’s tourism sector.”
“Each tourism town contributes its unique charm to South Australia, delivering outstanding experiences to visitors locally, nationally, and internationally.”

Local Government Association President, Mayor Dean Johnson congratulated this year’s winners and emphasised the important role local councils play in boosting regional tourism.
“Local councils play a big role in supporting the visitor economy, investing significantly each year in services and infrastructure which attract tourists,” Mayor Johnson said.
“LGA is proud to sponsor the Hello SA Top Tourism Town Awards, which not only promote our regions but also encourage South Australians to explore locally, supporting businesses and the
experiences that our iconic towns have to offer. Congratulations to all the winners – your efforts make our towns must-visit destinations within South Australia.”

The three winning towns will go on to represent South Australia at the national Australian Top Tourism Town Awards later this year.
