Ninety-One Towns Were Nominated. Now Just Ten Remain In The Running For Ag Town Of The Year
South Australia’s Top 10 Ag Towns for 2026 have been revealed, with communities from across the state now one step closer to claiming the title.
More than 90 towns were nominated this year before being whittled down to just 10 finalists.
From oyster farming and broadacre cropping to vineyards, citrus orchards and sheep stations, this year’s finalists showcase the diversity of regional South Australia.
The annual award, coordinated by PIRSA and delivered in partnership with InDaily, celebrates regional communities where agriculture is more than just an industry. It’s a major driver of local jobs, business, innovation and community life.
The 2026 Ag Town of the Year Top 10 are:
• Burra
• Coobowie
• Cowell
• Crystal Brook
• Cummins
• Kimba
• Moonta Bay
• Orroroo
• Stockwell
• Waikerie
The Regions Behind South Australia’s Top 10 Ag Towns
Eyre Peninsula has once again shown its agricultural muscle, with three towns making the Top 10. Cowell’s oyster industry, Cummins’ grain production and Kimba’s broadacre farming sector all play important roles in the region’s economy.
Yorke Peninsula’s finalists, Coobowie and Moonta Bay, prove farming remains central to the region despite its growing popularity as a holiday destination.
The Mid North is strongly represented with Burra, Crystal Brook and Orroroo. Between them, the towns are known for wool, sheep production, cropping and a long agricultural history that continues to shape the region today.
Stockwell flies the flag for the Barossa, where agriculture goes well beyond wine grapes, while Waikerie represents the Riverland’s globally recognised horticulture sector, including citrus, almonds and wine grapes.
Not to play favourites, but we were quietly chuffed to see Orroroo make the cut. We recently admitted on the Greater SA Podcast that we have a soft spot for the Southern Flinders town, so it’s nice to see it among this year’s top 10.
The finalists now move into the next stage of judging, with three towns eventually selected for site visits before the 2026 Ag Town of the Year winner is crowned.
