Robin and Ron Valentine’s handcrafted gins are putting Lameroo on the map

On a farm, just a stone’s throw from the town of Lameroo, Robin and Ron Valentine have turned their passion for great gin into a unique South Aussie business, Mallee Spirit.

What started as a side hustle has grown into a must-visit spot for anyone passing through the Mallee region.

It all began with Robin’s love of gin, which she discovered during her Adelaide Uni days at the bar. Over the years, she became a bit of a gin collector, and Ron, thinking it might save them a few bucks, bought her a still so she could make her own. Instead, it sparked a whole new adventure.

Robin’s curiosity and passion for gin led her to dive deep into the world of distillation. She devoured home distillation books and eventually completed the University of Adelaide’s Fundamentals of Spirit Distillation course in 2021. With her newfound knowledge, she was hooked.

Now, they’ve converted an old shearing shed into their distillery and cellar door, complete with reclaimed furniture and “Nelly,” their beautiful Australian-made still. This South Australian country gem is rustic, welcoming, and full of charm – just like the gins they create.

And luckily for us, Robin’s love of various gins shines through in the Mallee Spirit range, with a flavour to suit every gin lover. You can pick from their fresh and citrusy signature Myrtle Gin, the Spice Gin that brings star anise, cardamom, and cinnamon together, or the light and fruity Strawberry Gin. And then there’s the Lemonchello (spelled with a twist), sweet and zesty with a sherbet tang. I’ve heard it’s great on ice or poured over vanilla ice cream for a special treat!

But Mallee Spirit isn’t just about great gin, it’s about the experience too. In their converted shearing shed, Robin and Ron (who happens to be the town Mayor!) welcome guests to enjoy their handcrafted lineup which can be paired with their simple and delicious range of light meals, made largely with local produce. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover your favourite flavour before grabbing a few bottles to take home.

While sharing their gin experience with the local community, attending events, Robin and Ron have plenty of ideas brewing for the future. They hope to expand their on-site offerings to host more small, unique events – everything from rustic weddings, intimate dinner gatherings accompanied by a live music, to community Christmas celebrations. For the Valentines, it’s all about bringing people together and celebrating the beautiful space they’ve created.

So, if you’re in the Mallee or just passing through, give them a call. If they’re home, they’ll open up and welcome you in for a chat, a tasting, and something to eat.

And for those who can’t visit, gift packs of their delicious gins are available, making perfect Christmas presents – and they’ll ship anywhere in Australia!
