Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge Earns World-Class Status
Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge has just been named the “Best in Oceania” in the first-ever Telegraph Hotel Awards and ranked eighth on the list of the 50 best hotels worldwide. This stunning clifftop retreat overlooking the Southern Ocean is being recognised for setting “the ultimate standard for Australian luxury.”
Having reopened in 2024 after being destroyed in the devastating 2020 bushfires, Southern Ocean Lodge is back and stronger than ever, earning praise alongside hotels like the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok and Ellerman House in Cape Town. The accolade places it ahead of other top Australian hotels, such as Brisbane’s The Calile Hotel and Hamilton Island’s Qualia.
The Telegraph’s global ranking was based on more than 10,000 hotel reviews, narrowed down by a panel of expert reviewers. The recognition is already sparking interest, with global travellers itching to book a stay, bringing more visitors to Kangaroo Island and boosting the local economy.
Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said, “It is wonderful to see globally acclaimed Southern Ocean Lodge get recognised again following its reopening in December 2023. Home of the world’s second-best beach at Stokes Bay, now Kangaroo Island is named home of Australia’s best hotel.”
She added, “After almost four years in the planning, design, and construction since it was razed in the 2020 bushfires, the new-look luxury accommodation has already got the attention of the world, drawing visitors from around the globe and boosting the region’s international recovery even further.”
With Kangaroo Island ranked #2 on Lonely Planet’s 2024 Top Regions Hotlist and Stokes Bay named the second-best beach in the world, the island is becoming a must-visit destination for travellers worldwide.
Tourism is a huge part of Kangaroo Island’s economy, supporting one in three jobs, and the success of Southern Ocean Lodge is set to take the region’s recovery to new heights.
