SA’s most remote Fringe venue – William Creek

Melissa Smith

The most remote Fringe venue welcomes back Nathan May for another unforgettable show

Fringe fever is hitting the outback, with the tiny but mighty town of William Creek getting its dose of arts and music on March 29. With a permanent population that fits in a single 4WD, this pocket-sized town on the Oodnadatta Track might be small, but it sure knows how to put on a show.

Last year, William Creek made history as the most northern venue ever to host an Adelaide Fringe event, and it’s back for another round. Headlining this year’s performance is the award-winning Arabana musician Nathan May, whose songs weave together culture, storytelling, and a deep connection to country. His music, including the acclaimed singles Fix It Up, and It’s Gotta Start Somewhere, has been making waves in the music world.

William Creek

For those who haven’t made the trip, William Creek is as outback as it gets. It’s the closest town to Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, and perched on the edge of the world’s largest pastoral station, Anna Creek. The pub is legendary, the golf course quirky, and if you’re up for an adventure, a scenic flight over the Painted Hills or the infamous and vast salt lake is an absolute must.

Nathan May’s music is all about storytelling, and William Creek is the perfect backdrop. His latest single, Love From Me, co-written with Kevin Bennett and featuring a stunning guitar solo from Troy Cassar-Daley, tells the story of his great-grandparents, an Arabana woman and a white man, and the challenges they faced in the early 1900s. The song is real and raw, much like the landscapes surrounding this remote town.

So, if you’re up for a Fringe experience with a side of red dirt and big skies, William Creek is the place to be. A night under the outback stars, a cold drink at the pub, and Nathan May’s soulful tunes – what more could you want?
