SA’s luxury new Private Island Getaway – Rumi on Louth

Abbie Tiller

A luxury Island escape – and you don’t have to be a Millionaire to enjoy it

Just when we thought SA had it all – a once-barren sheep-grazing block on the exquisite Eyre Peninsula has been transformed into a luxury private island destination. It doesn’t get much better than this!

Just 10 minutes off the coast of Port Lincoln lies the brand new five-star resort few know about but everyone should experience. Rumi on Louth redefines luxury and sustainability. And the best part is, you don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy it.

The transformation of this island is thanks to Che Metcalfe, a visionary who saw more than a forgotten patch of land. After selling his multimillion-dollar business, Uniti Group, Metcalfe sought an off-grid retreat where he could fish barefoot and reconnect with nature. But Louth Island’s pristine turquoise waters, secluded sandy beaches, and untamed beauty were too extraordinary to keep to himself. Driven by a mission to restore the island to its former glory, he pledged $10 million to revegetate the land, with native bushland already flourishing as part of this ambitious project.

Rumi on Louth offers visitors a taste of paradise without the hefty price tag of international travel. Upon arrival via an amphibious “sea legs” vessel, guests are met with jaw-dropping views and a warm, unpretentious Eyre Peninsula welcome. Whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, milestone birthday, or a dream wedding, the 135-hectare haven has something for everyone.

Chef Jonno Sweet serves up the best of the EP at the Island’s Samphire Restaurant

Dotted across the island are unique accommodations ranging from five-star ocean suites to spacious private retreats. And if the setting alone isn’t enough to win you over, Chef Jonno Sweet will. Born and raised in the region, Sweet’s ‘Chef Hatted’ culinary career is inspired by his environment, weaving diverse flavours and techniques into his deeply rooted passion for local seafood and native ingredients.

The experience doesn’t stop at Rumi’s Samphire Restaurant. Island guests have access to some incredible activities that blend relaxation with adventure. Take a sunset catamaran cruise, lounge in a cabana on a private beach and order a cocktail, hop on stand-up paddle board or pull some King George whiting in from a kayak. Electric buggy tours offer a guided exploration of the island, or you can be whisked back to the mainland for Lincoln’s famous shark diving experience, sea lion encounters, or a day trip to explore the amazing offerings on the Eyre Peninsula.

Despite its exclusivity, Rumi on Louth, is surprisingly accessible. With options starting at $600 per night for a custom experience or $2,000 for an all-inclusive package, the resort caters to both those seeking a splurge-worthy getaway and those planning a more tailored trip. Sustainability is at the heart of it all—Rumi operates entirely off-grid, and the island’s ongoing restoration ensures your stay contributes to its preservation. Stage two of this incredible development is expected to get underway in 2025, with more five-star luxury villas being added, as well as a fully-staffed day spa. But guests are already raving about the in-room massage service on offer!

Also part of the resort’s next chapter, the island will soon become an exquisite destination wedding venue. And to ensure it ticks all the boxes, Metcalfe and his fiancée Natasha, will tie the knot, giving Rumi their official seal of approval in 2025.

Breathtaking experience with Five Star reviews

Having been open to guests for just a few months, he said those who’ve been amongst the first to experience a taste of his dreamy island getaway, had been blown away from the very moment they’re collected from the mainland and transported from the shores of Boston Bay to the paradise that awaits.

“People have just been amazed at the experience of hopping on board the sea legs vessel,” he said.
“And when they reach the island they really get a taste of the magic. The friendly local staff, the vegetation springing back to life. It really is untouched beauty and you can just see it on people’s faces as they arrive. When they head off for some relaxing beach time on the eastern side of the island, and they come up over the sand dunes and see the turquoise water and white sandy beach, it really does take their breath away.”

For paradise that doesn’t require a passport – it’s just a 35-minute flight from Adelaide, a scenic drive through the friendly farming and coastal towns of the Eyre Peninsula, or you can cruise across on the Spencer Gulf Searoad ferry from Wallaroo to Lucky Bay.
