Australian Idol just part of the music journey for Abbie Ferris

Reality TV is taking over our screens right now, but let’s be real—becoming a superstar is a whole lot more achievable than marrying a stranger. And if you’ve got a voice like South Aussie country-pop singer Abbie Ferris, it’s practically destiny.

The 25-year-old songstress swapped her horse property in Mallala for the bright lights of Sydney, stepping onto the Australian Idol stage and belting out Shania Twain’s That Don’t Impress Me Much. But the judges? Oh, they were very impressed. Three yeses and a Golden Ticket later, Ferris is now officially in the Top 30.

It’s been a long ride in the making. Rewind six years, and Ferris was just a fresh-faced talent at the Barossa Valley’s first Budburst Festival, a showcase for emerging young musicians. Safe to say that “bud” has well and truly blossomed.

Her Idol journey is just the latest milestone in an already thriving career. Last October, Ferris released her debut EP, You Don’t Live Here Anymore, written over trips back and forth to Nashville—the heart of country music. The album is a mix of sassy, sad, and fun, with just the right amount of heartache (what’s country music without a little heartbreak?).

She’s graced the red carpet at the ARIAs, shared the stage with Australia’s top country stars at CMC Rocks Queensland, and now she’s gunning for the Idol crown.

“I want to take my music everywhere, and show the world that a small town South Australian girl can grow up to be a woman who makes a big impact on people’s hearts in places I couldn’t have imagined when I was a kid,” she says.

“My parents raised me to trust my heart and do what feels right, and when I connect with people through a song – whether it’s in a co-write, in the studio, on a festival stage – it’s like I’m back riding a horse in a paddock where all you see is horizon, and everything else in life melts away. That’s what I’m always chasing with my music”.

So, can this country girl go all the way? Tune in to Channel 7 at 7:30 pm, Sunday to Wednesday, and find out!
