A festive fusion of fitness and community spirit

The brainchild of Matt Hale, Co-Director at Barossa Outdoors, and with the support of Williamstown Action Group, Santa Dash 2023 hits the road on December 10.

The fully volunteer-run event, known as “The Original South Australian Santa Fun Run and Walk”, and last year’s winner of the “Walking for Recreation” award from Walking SA, offers participants the chance to contribute to the community by lacing up their running shoes. At just $10 per entrant and children under 16 free, it’s an easy way to support the local Williamstown area. And don’t despair if you’re not a Sporty Santa – there are options for short or long courses in which you can walk, jog, or run. Every cent raised from ticket sales will directly benefit the Williamstown Action Group, a passionate group of volunteers who work together for the betterment of their town and area.

The two routes, spanning three or eight kilometres, weave through the scenic landscapes of South Para Reservoir Reserve, pine plantations, and native forests and once the Santas have crossed the finish line, everyone is invited to the Christmas Fair at Williamstown School Oval, in a post-run festive celebration.

It’s not just about fitness at the Santa Dash – In addition to the ticket prices, people are urged to bring gold coin donations to support the Seeds of Hope Suicide Prevention Network, based in the Barossa Valley. This vital program provides information, resources, education, and training to build a community of people committed to suicide prevention and mental health awareness, in the hopes of raising the capacity of the community to ask difficult questions that may save a life.

The annual Santa Dash wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of dedicated volunteers and the support of organisations such as SA Water, Barossa Council, Southern Barossa Alliance, and Walking SA. So as the countdown to Santa Dash 2023 begins, the community is invited to participate, support a local cause, and make this festive run an annual date on the Christmas calendar.
