Run, walk or ride the outback at Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy’s Great Kaṉku-Breakaways Bolt returns this June

Dust off your sneakers, oil the bike chain, and start limbering up – The Great Kaṉku–Breakaways Bolt is back for 2025, cutting through Coober Pedy and the South Australian outback.

Set against the jaw-dropping backdrop of the Kaṉku–Breakaways Conservation Park, you’ll want to pack your camera for some truly out-of-this-world views as you put your endurance to the test.

There’s a challenge for every ability, with run distances including the 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half marathon, 10km, 5km and a free 2.5km kids’ fun run for under 12s. If you’d prefer to pull out the tredly, rides range from 10km to 72km. You can even pack your pooch and offspring, with prams and dogs welcome to join the action.

Adding a splash of local colour to this year’s event, the t-shirts, lanyards and trophies will feature eye-catching artwork by Susie Prince from Umoona Community Art Centre. Sponsored by Peak Iron Mines, BHP and the District Council of Coober Pedy, the day wraps up with a community dinner and after party at the Italian Club – the perfect chance to swap stories, rest your legs, and soak up the outback spirit.

While you’re in town, why not dive into the opal capital of the world? Better yet, stick around for the Coober Pedy Opal Festival, held the following weekend, June 13–15.

There’s no better time to hit the road and soak in the outback charm. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual rider, or just in it for the unforgettable experience, The Great Kaṉku–Breakaways Bolt offers a perfect blend of challenge, camaraderie, and adventure. With its rugged beauty, friendly atmosphere, and plenty to do in town, this event promises to leave you with memories that’ll last longer than your sore muscles.

So, lace up, charge your camera, and get ready for a June weekend packed with stunning views, heart-pumping action, and a whole lot of outback fun. You won’t want to miss it!
