So if you’re feeling adventurous, and you’re over 12 years old, Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre is where you can dive into this VR shark cage for a thrilling experience!
But if you’re more of a looker than a diver, you can pop in to visit and learn more about “Shakka,” the local legend and resident Great White Shark.
This 5.5-metre Great White became an icon of the coastal town after a snapper line mishap in Germein Bay in 1998. She ended up on shore, where about 2,000 curious onlookers gathered to see her. Even the guy who wrote Jaws showed up for the autopsy, which confirmed it was all just a tragic accident. Though they couldn’t preserve the real shark, Port Pirie made sure Shakka lives on in spirit with a life-sized model at the Tourism Centre.
