Port Kenny feels the need for Shear Speed

$10,000 up for grabs at Port Kenny Speed Shear

Shear legends will flock to the tiny Eyre Peninsula town of Port Kenny this month – stepping up to the stands for a $10,000 speed shearing event.
A mob of locals have come together to host the one-off shearing extravaganza, as their neighbours at Elliston take a well-earned break from hosting their popular annual speed shear.
With a vantage point form the beer garden at the Port Kenny Pub, gun shearers will showcase their wool wrangling talents on stage, while spectators sit back and enjoy the precision, agility and strength of the highly skilled sport of shearing. With this type of ‘physicality’ speed shearing would no doubt be a hotly contested event for Brisbane 2032!
Nikki Schubert – one of the passionate Port Kenny locals behind the event, expects some exceptional local shearing talent to be on show, including gun shearer from up the road, Brandon Waters, coming off his recent success at the Crystal Brook Show.
Guns Blazing!! EP Shearer, Brandon Waters.
“Shearing teams are such an important asset to our rural communities, so it is exciting to dedicate a night to celebrating their talents,” Nikki said.
“The shearing population expands at this time of year with shearers travelling here to help teams get through the busy season, so August is an exciting time for a speed shear because there is a great amount of competition.”
Four thousand dollars is on the line for the overall winner of the open speed shear, with over $10,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs all up.
Nikki praised the generosity of locals and sponsors, including those with their boots on the ground supplying and organising sheep, equipment, trailers, and volunteering to get the event up and running. “It’s has been a community effort from the get go,” she said.
