Why this small town’s big impact in farming and community spirit took top honours

When we think of Penola, we often picture its scenic vineyards, rich history, and the warm welcome that comes with exploring the Limestone Coast. All of this is true, but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a tight-knit community with diverse talents and ambitions—and the proof is in the prize. Penola has just taken home the title of South Australia’s Agricultural Town of the Year for 2024, proving it’s not all about red wine!

Smack bang in the heart of the iconic Coonawarra region, Penola is a town that blends rich heritage with first-rate farming talent. Founded in 1850, it’s not only known for its wine but also for being home to Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop. Today, Penola buzzes with boutique shops, art galleries, and a booming agricultural scene.

“Penola punches well above its weight in terms of agricultural output,” says Simone Kain, co-founder of George the Farmer and proud Penola resident. “We produce a diverse amount of produce from grains, prime lamb, delicious beef, pines, hemp, dairy, and, of course, grapes. We’re lucky to generally have high rainfall, access to underground water, and really fertile soils.”

Kain’s work with George the Farmer, which has educated over 600,000 kids about agriculture, showcases just how connected Penola is to its roots. “We’re a creative community,” she adds, pointing out how the town’s innovative spirit extends from artisan winemakers to farming families who keep South Australia’s regional economy thriving. This latest accolade is a nod to Penola’s adaptability, whether producing wine, educating future generations, or innovating with new crops.

As the sixth town to receive the Ag Town of the Year Award since its inception, Penola joins past winners in demonstrating the vital role agriculture plays in South Australia’s regional economy, generating $18.5 billion in 2022-23 and supporting vibrant communities across the state.

With record nominations and public votes this year, the Agricultural Town of the Year Award continues to shine a spotlight on the heart and resilience of South Australia’s rural communities, where agriculture forms the backbone of both economy and way of life.

As Mayor Des Noll proudly shares, “Penola embraces the whole spectrum of agriculture,” a sentiment that rings true as the town continues to bring tradition and innovation together, proving that small towns can pack a punch and make a big impact.
