Pedal for free on the Fleurieu Coast

Fleurieu

Wheely good times that won’t cost you a cent!

If you’re after a breezy, budget-friendly way to enjoy the Fleurieu Peninsula this summer, the Fleurieu Coast Free Bikes scheme is just the ticket.

Whether you’re cruising the coastline or tackling a trail, exploring this stunning slice of South Australia on two wheels is a win for both your wallet and your sense of adventure.

Since kicking off in 2017, this free bike hire program has been a hit with locals and visitors. And with an array of bikes up for grabs – including retro cruisers, adult mountain bikes, and even kid-sized mountain bikes – there’s a set of wheels for the whole family. Yankalilla, Normanville, and Carrickalinga are just a short pedal apart, with mostly flat terrain that’s perfect for a relaxed spin.

Start your adventure at the Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre (conveniently perched between Yankalilla and Normanville) or grab a set of wheels at Smiling Samoyed Brewery in Myponga. All it takes is filling out a hire form and leaving a valid photo ID as security – then you’re free to ride from 9am-5pm  on weekdays and 10am -2pm on weekends.

For those looking to kick it up a gear, the Myponga Reservoir Reserve offers trails to challenge mountain bikers of all skill levels. Or if you’d rather a laid-back pace, pack a picnic and cycle to one of the pristine beaches in Yankalilla or Normanville and soak up some southern beach sunshine.

The scheme is supported by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure’s Community Grants funding and the bikes are maintained by the Yankalilla Men’s Shed crew, who’ve teamed up with the District Council of Yankalilla to keep everything in great shape.

So, whether you’re a local looking for a new way to enjoy the scenery or a visitor eager to explore, there’s no better way to spend the day on the Fleurieu than with a free set of wheels.
