No Shit! South Aussies Named Among the Most Welcoming in the World

Abbie Tiller

Port Lincoln up there with the most cracking cities in the World

Give yourselves a pat on the back fellow South Aussies. This little state hanging out at the bottom of the country like the hem of a well-worn Akubra has been officially named one of the planets “Most Welcoming Regions”.

No surprises here. Do you think we’d spend our days banging out stories about how good this place if it was the arse end of the world? But holiday makers who lock in their adventures via a lucrative third party money making scheme have spoken, and Booking.com has called it!

South Australia is now officially a world leader in outstanding hospitality – up there with places we’ve not even heard of, like Osijek-Baranja in Croatia, Misiones (Argentina) and Bretagne, France, where they’re luring folks with fancy pancakes.

But the real jewel in the crown for SA? Of course it’s Port Lincoln – cracking the top 10 Most Welcoming Cities in Australia at the Traveller Review Awards. No arguments here! Port Lincoln is South Australia’s very own Summer Bay – where you roll in and half expect Alf Steward to stroll up and say “welcome to the bay”, while giving you the lowdown on where to throw a line in or grab the best feed of seafood in town. Lincoln and the friendly EP folks, who’d probably offer you their last beer if you looked thirsty, certainly deserve the welcome accolade.

These awards aren’t just about slapping SA on a global stage, they’re a nod to the heart and soul of our communities. From the vineyards of the Barossa to the rugged coastlines of Kangaroo Island, South Aussies don’t just give you a wave,  they roll out the red carpet, hand you a glass of wine, and make sure you’re sorted for a good time.

And there’s plenty of good times ahead. From some banging music festivals coming up on the Eyre Peninsula (Streaky Sounds and Granite Rocks), LIV Golf will pull a crowd in town next month, the Fringe Festival will again spill out into the regions and the Barossa will put on a fancy welcome for footy fans with the AFL Gather Round at Lyndoch’s new “Barossa Park” in April.
