Explore New South Wales’ Wild Far West at Nine Mile Station Stay
Looking for a true-blue outback escape with a touch of character? Just “nine miles” north of Broken Hill, is Nine Mile Station, the perfect place to explore the wild far west of New South Wales. And it’s just a leisurely drive across the South Aussie border!
It’s the ultimate bush basecamp to pull up your van, roll out a swag and set up under the stars – or just wheel in and book a couple of nights in the station’s Shearers Quarters, and enjoy a hot shower and a real station stay experience. You can even request a secluded campsite for that middle-of-nowhere vibe — but you’re still only ten minutes from a Macca’s run or a coldie at one of the Silver City’s legendary watering holes
Meet Bruno, Pedro and Pam at the pet-friendly property
The 93,000 acre working sheep, goat and cattle station is home to an abundance of wildlife, from wild goats, kangaroos, the odd wild pig and plenty of roaming bush chooks. But when you first roll into Nine Mile, it’s resident goats Bruno and Pedro who make up the welcoming party – with Pam the unique short-legged lamb following closely behind. The pet-friendly property also has a small herd of gorgeous Gallaway and Highland steers.
Go Four Wheel Driving and take in a sensational outback sunset
Station owners, the Lawrence family, are pretty endearing too! Greg’s a bit of an outback icon, or as the Wikicamp reviewers put it “an absolute legend”. If you’re up for a bit of four wheel driving, Greg can guide you to a few of the property’s best tracks and some incredible spots to pull up a rock and tuck into a beer and cheese platter at sunset.
On the edge of Nine Mile Station, the Living Desert Sculptures is a sunset chaser’s dream. Towering sandstone blocks, carved by artists from around the world, sit proudly atop Sundown Hill. As the sun dips below the horizon and paints the outback plains in gold, it’s peaceful, a bit romantic — and guaranteed to leave you with some cracking photos.
And if you want to take in a bit of history, Nine Mile is also home to where much of Broken Hill’s rich mining history began. On the property you’ll find The historic Daydream Mine –  founded in 1881, and once a bustling community, visitors can book an underground tour and check out the fascinating history carved below the earth’s surface.
Nine Mile really is about “location, location, location!”. Just a short drive away you can wander the art galleries and sip on a beer at Silverton – the outback mining town famous for its role in Mad Max 2. The iconic Mundi Mundi Plains, home of one of Australia’s biggest outback music festivals is also “next door” – making Nine Mile the perfect place to set up camp and take in some of the region’s beauty either side of the Bash.
This place is a real hidden gem for those wanting a real taste of station life and a base to explore a region that delivers on rugged beauty and outback charm.
