From native foods and grasslands to photography and painting, Nature Studio is bringing five free creative events to regional SA this October
You don’t need to be an artist to have a go at this one.
Country Arts SA’s free Nature Studio series is back this October, giving people across regional SA the chance to get outside, try something creative and look at their own part of the world a little differently.
For the first time, Nature Studio is part of the state’s Nature Festival, with events happening in Burra, Warooka, Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Naracoorte on Saturday, October 10.
And there’s a fair bit more on offer than sitting under a tree with a sketchbook.
Pick Your Nature Studio Adventure
Each event pairs local artists and creatives with a different outdoor experience, from native grasslands and Indigenous gardens to bush foods, photography and watercolours.
In Burra, therapeutic horticulturalist and artist Emma Lewellyn will lead Meet The Grasslands, introducing people to the region’s critically endangered native grasslands and the basics of nature journaling.
At Naracoorte, Uncle Doug Nicholls will lead a walk through an Indigenous garden before Meintangk artist Tanya Hartman takes over for an art workshop. Tanya also designed the garden’s welcome mural and stepping stones.
Whyalla’s event takes a tastier turn, with Nikita Charlton and Kelly Wallace running an interactive native food expo looking at native flavours and ways to use them in modern cooking.
Over in Port Lincoln, Sandy Harder will head to Brinkworth Reserve for a session focused on looking closely at what’s around you and turning those details into art using simple tools and mark-making techniques.
And at Warooka, photographer Steph Ball and watercolourist Rachelle Plazeriano will take over the 100-year-old gardens at Ballara Art and Lifestyle Retreat for an afternoon of photography, painting and wandering among the greenery.
Country Arts SA arts and culture manager Deb Myers said Nature Studio was as much about getting people together and spending time outdoors as it was about making art.
“Nature Studio is a wonderful opportunity for like-minded people to get together and explore creativity, artmaking and the natural environment,” she said.
“It’s about community-building and connecting with nature, not about creating the perfect artwork.
“From experienced artists to someone picking up a sketchbook for the first time, everyone is encouraged to participate.”
