Melrose celebrates 100 ‘remarkable’ years of Showtime fun

“The Picnic Show of the North” set for a big centenary show

This October long weekend at the foot of the Flinders Ranges’ iconic Mt Remarkable, history, community, and good times will come together for the show of the century!

The Melrose Show, known as “the picnic show of the north” will celebrate 100 years of showtime fun, with a day packed full of entertainment, plus a special night of celebrations not to be missed. Expect all the classic country show charm, with some exciting added touches to mark the special occasion.

Show day will be buzzing with activities, from the thrill of sideshow alley, to shearing demos, horses in action, a bike stunt show, face-painting and an interesting demonstration of chainsaw art. The kids can follow a bountiful trail collecting goodies in the Remarkable Treasure Hunt, and this year the stakes are high for exhibitors, with Mount Remarkable Agricultural Show society allocating a “commemorative class” to each section of competition, with $50 in prize money up for grabs.

From award-winning pumpkins, hay, wool and cattle, to beautifully crocheted blankets, photography and handicraft, there’ll be an impressive line-up of exhibits. Pet lovers are in for a treat, too. This year, the beloved pet section makes its return, welcoming all creatures great and small. Whether you’ve got a clever cat, dapper dog, bird or farm animal or even a feral critter or reptile, get your entries in and your little ball of fun could be a blue ribbon winner!

Special “Back to Melrose” evening

As the sun sets, the celebrations continue with a special dinner event at the newly renovated Melrose Sporting Complex. Some of the region’s legends are coming back to Melrose to be guest speakers at the “Back to Melrose” evening. Paul Haines, a former local footballer who spent 12 years in the AFL working with both the Adelaide Crows and Geelong Football Club, will open the day’s events as well as being one of the night’s guest speakers. Paul’s fascinating career has taken him from the AFL to working in Formula 1 with Red Bull and now as a High Performance Consultant for the Australian Defence Force.

Joining Paul on the guest list are Courtney Gum, an AFLW All-Australian and owner of Kinetic Balance Health, and Megan McLaughlin, former Australian of the Year Local Hero, and founder and director of Herd of Hope, the only charity that provides support for transplant recipients and donor families in rural and regional areas. Footballer Josh Willoughby, ex-Sydney Swan and current owner-manager of Runda Specialty Footwear, will also take the stage, as well as Olympic basketball champion, Abby Bishop.

The evening, hosted by 102.3’s Ali Clarke, promises to be a memorable one, and guests will be treated to a delicious three-course meal by Gumview Gourmet of Melrose. Be sure to grab your tickets and be part of this historic celebration.

You can also roll out a swag or pitch a tent and spend the weekend under the glorious Flinders sky – booking and enquiries details below.
