Meet the farmer bringing sustainability and style to your table
When you make a living off the land, you learn to adapt. And on a farm just outside of Loxton in the Riverland, Storm Cass has done just that.
Between broadacre grain growing and sheep grazing with her husband, she’s no stranger to the challenges of farming life. This year, with no crops to harvest, the drought has hit hard, but like a lot of farmers, she’s finding ways to weather the storm – pun intended.
Four years ago, what started as a hobby creating horse art turned into a thriving business – Markeri Farm Equine Design. With Storm’s love of horses and a knack for pyrography (burning intricate images into wood), over time, her hobby grew into a business crafting personalised, eco-friendly serving boards and resin art that are as practical as they are beautiful.
Her boards, made from Australian Camphor Laurel timber, are naturally antibacterial and sustainably sourced. By repurposing this invasive tree species, Storm’s creations don’t just look good, they help the environment too. Each board is handcrafted from a single piece of wood, ensuring they’re non-toxic, food-safe, and built to last.
Storm has spent years perfecting her process, using Australian-made resin that’s BPA-free, UV-resistant, and heat-tolerant. From wedding gifts to unique kitchen pieces, every board can be personalised with a design from her templates or you can create a completely custom-made design.
Life on the farm doesn’t stop at crafting. Storm’s days are full, caring for a menagerie of animals, including her beloved horses and a team of hard-working kelpies. Having faced the ups and downs of farm life, and now another tough season, she knows just how vital it is to support small businesses, especially those in farming communities.
Whether you’re ordering online or picking up directly from the farmgate in Loxton, Markeri Farm Equine Design is a great way to shop local this Christmas. Gift cards are available too, making it even easier to give a thoughtful, one-of-a-kind present.
This Christmas season, Greater SA’s Harvesting Hope in SA Campaign is all about encouraging Australians to put their spending where it makes the biggest difference. By choosing businesses like Storm’s, you’re not just buying a gift, you’re supporting the farmers and families who need it most.
