Kangaroo Island’s got talent! Local musicians set to shine in ‘HOMEGROWN’
Kangaroo Island’s cranking up the volume for its first-ever Adelaide Fringe event, bringing the magic of music to four local communities.
‘HOMEGROWN’ is set to drop the beat with KI’s thriving live music scene, featuring an eclectic mix of local talent – from farmers to fishermen, students to retirees – aged 8 to almost 80!
‘HOMEGROWN’ producer Tim Nicholson of East Texas Music said, “With a population of around 5000, Kangaroo Island punches way above its weight with its ever-growing culture of local and live music. And now it’s time to share the love!
“Not only does the show feature performers from all around the Island, it is also hitting the road to take the entertainment to outlying communities.
“Prepare to be blown away by this amazing line-up of musical talent from beautiful Kangaroo Island!”
Meet the talent shaping KI’s music scene
Craig Smart – A well-known face in town, Craig has been singing and playing guitar for over 14 years. Influenced by Diesel, Paul Kelly, and Live, he’ll be performing all original songs for HOMEGROWN. “At the time, I wrote those songs for me but now I’m ready to share them. I’m excited to be part of this event – it should be fun and will showcase all the great local talent. One of the hardest things as a musician – especially solo – is finding and booking gigs. This is great as all the logistics have been done for us!”
Martina – At just nine years old, Martina is already a regular on the KI music scene, often performing solo or alongside her father, musician Terry Douglas. A singer and guitarist, she plays an array of covers and dreams of writing her own originals. While juggling school, basketball, karate, art, and family, Martina has big ambitions for a professional music career, leaning into blues, soul, and R&B.
Rowena (Boggiano) – A singer-songwriter inspired by Kangaroo Island’s natural beauty, Rowena lives in Vivonne Bay and works as a Park Ranger. She’ll be performing all original songs at HOMEGROWN. “I’m stoked to be part of this event and it’s a really cool way to showcase local artists.”
Izzy Clare – Izzy’s musical journey has taken off since joining the Youth Mentorship Program at The Junction in Kingscote. Under the guidance of experienced musician Tristan Simon, she has started writing her own original songs inspired by personal experiences. “I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing, maybe release a few songs and see where it goes from there,” she said. Izzy also sees HOMEGROWN as “pretty cool, especially being a young woman in music in a secluded location.”
