Ryder Gilbert tops SA on his way to becoming World’s best
Hindmarsh Island’s Ryder Gilbert has dreamt of being the best road racer in the world since the age of three. And with his trophy cabinet filling fast, that dream could one day become a reality for the talented teenager.
Despite being one of the youngest motorcycle riders in the competition, the seventeen-year-old recently took out the state’s Pete Kerr, Steve Martin Cup, for the most race points awarded for wins throughout the season.
The accolade marks an incredible finish to a successful 12 months for Gilbert, topping all ages as the highest point scorer, as well as being crowned the 2024 300cc State Champion and coming fourth in the 600cc category.
Over the moon with the honour, Ryder says his Dad had been a big influence on his racing career so far.
“I started riding dirt bikes on and off at the age of three, but in 2018 it really began when I got to go along with Dad to track days,” Gilbert said.
“Dad was really into it and I thought it looked pretty cool, so so we put road tyres on my dirt bike and I gave it a go.
“I wasn’t the best at first but I practiced lots and got up to a 300(cc) which I have been racing in the Australian Championships the last two years.
“I love the speed and adrenalin of the sport and with the 600 category I get up to 265 km/hr, and once you get used to it you want to go even faster.”
And with another big year ahead, there will be plenty of opportunity for speed. He’ll be competing in the Australian championships later this month, followed by the first round of the state titles.
Moto racing not only requires speed, but also a fair bit of cash. Young Ryder is keen to thank his generous sponsors which include Routleys Bathroom Kitchen Laundry, Gilbert Design and Construct, The Insurance Office, Energy SA, Goolwa Foodland and Southern Moto, Victor Harbor.
