Whether you need some electric-powered back-up or a mapped out adventure, Copper Trails Bike Hire has it all
If you’re looking for a blend of adventure, exercise and scenic bliss, Copper Trails Bike Hire has just the ticket—or should we say, the wheels? Located in Moonta’s Main Street, this is more than a bike shop – it’s the gateway to exploring the Copper Coast in a way that’s fun, memorable and gets folks moving and enjoying the great outdoors.
Three years ago, Anne and Colin Minion set out to put Moonta on the map for two-wheeled adventures. They’ve since earned two SA Tourism Awards, but it’s their passion for showcasing the region’s untouched charm that’s captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. With bikes for the whole family—including speedy e-bikes that cruise at up to 25 km/h, you can either rent a bike and choose your own adventure, or take up a meticulously crafted Copper Trail Bike Hire experience.
Their newest offering is a self-guided coastal tour that’s as much about the journey as it is about the treats along the way. You’ll be kitted out with a bike and a map at the Moonta store, before heading off to Port Hughes for fish and chips by the beach. Ice-cream awaits at Moonta Bay and there’s even a surprise gift awaiting along the journey. The specialised map includes a handful of stories about the landmarks you pass, as you enjoy the simple pleasure of cycling along a trail dotted with glorious scenes that look like they’ve come straight out of a classic Aussie postcard.
If you keep an eye on the Copper Coast Bike Hire’s Facebook page, you’ll be first to find out about the latest packages Anne is brewing up, with a fun new adventure soon to be released which includes stops at Wallaroo’s Bond Store which incorporates a microbrewery, distillery and restaurant, and another stop-off at Kadina’s Hedonbar Brewing Company. A taxi back to Moonta? Sorted. It’s the perfect excuse to ride, sip, and relax.
Anne’s no stranger to doing business on the Copper Coast. She and her late husband Daryl were the original owners of Kadina’s Copy King. She’s returned to the region she loves to celebrate its history and beauty and make it home.
From restoring donated bikes with the Moonta Men’s Shed and donating them to the Salvation Army, to collaborating with local businesses, Anne knows the magic of working together to keep businesses and tourism thriving.
“A lot of visitors come to play over the Summer, but we have some equally as stunning weather during the cooler months, which is perfect for grabbing a bike, getting some exercise and exploring the Copper Coast,” she said.
The historic Moonta Mines site has recently been added to Australia’s UNESCO World Heritage ‘tentative list’, and is undergoing a $4.8 million project to restore, conserve and build new experiences, which Anne says will be a wonderful addition to the tourist itinerary.
“Moonta and the Copper Coast really has a little bit of everything,” she said,
“At the start of 2024 there were four or five empty shops in Moonta’s main street, which are now filled. There’s a brand new bakery serving up delicious specialty breads, and there’s a great blend of clothing outlets, cafes, gift shops, antiques and bric-a-brac as well as Drakes supermarket .”
Copper Trails Bike Hire not only specialises in getting you out and about peddling their own selection of bikes, they also stock a range of e-bikes, human-powered bikes as well as the latest Prodigy and Proline Scooters and accessories. Or if your old bike needs a bit of attention, Colin’s a whizz at service and repairs, to help keep everyone out and about and enjoying life on two wheels.
