Community Spirit and Treasures Galore: Inside Wallaroo Lions Monthly Markets

Melissa Smith

More than just a market at Wallaroo

The Wallaroo Lions monthly markets not only bring a plethora of market stalls to the beachside town but also play a significant role in giving back to the coastal community.
Commitment to community service and improving lives is what the Lions of Australia is all about. With all proceeds from stallholders’ rent going back to the Wallaroo Lions Club, they are able to support local organisations and charities within their district.
Boasting up to 40 stalls, the market fills Wallaroo’s glorious town hall, sprawling to outside spaces with visiting traders amongst the regular mix of stallholders.
During the Saturday market sessions, Wallaroo Scout Group, and Little Claws Rescue take turns running a BBQ, providing shoppers with the opportunity to support them by grabbing a snag or two or a bacon and egg sandwich.
One of the local regulars at Wallaroo, AA Sweets and Treats will tantalise your tastebuds with delicious goods. A mother-daughter small business run by Alison and Anna, creates sweet temptations including Easter-themed musk candies to Christmas gingerbreads. The business has grown significantly since its humble beginnings in 2015, making it the perfect gift for the sweet tooth.
Other stalls include ‘Salti Breeze’ towels, offering sand-free beach towels made from recycled plastic bottles that are ultra-absorbent, holding over a litre of water! Meanwhile, ‘Sharon’s Designs’ offers handmade items, from bowl cosies and shopping bags to towels and toiletry bag rolls.
With a background in nursing and a passion for skincare, Jean and Andy, bring their love for natural skincare to Wallaroo. A small independent business, Jean creates carefully formulated products, that are organic and help combat the detrimental effects that harsh chemicals and other environmental factors can have on our hands and skin.
You’ll always find a treasure at the markets and Tina’s Treasures won’t disappoint with her handmade unique copper jewellery and accessories, while Linda from Sunshine and Bubbles offers lightweight, stylish and colourful faux leather earrings.
One of the friendliest markets you’ll find, with the Lion’s Donut Van pumping out their famous treats as well as coffee, and tea backed by the local radio station 89.3 Gulf FM providing some tunes, the Wallaroo Market is the place to be on the YP.
