Perfect Light Film Festival brings three days of movie magic to the outback
Broken Hill is rolling out the red carpet for three days of film, fun, and creativity at the Perfect Light Film Festival from March 21 to 23 – and the best part is that it’s completely free.
The festival kicks off on Friday night at Silver City Cinema with the Oz Indie Showcase and Networking Evening. There’ll be a screening of an Australian independent film followed by a Q&A session where film buffs and budding creatives can chat about the magic of moviemaking. Make sure you arrive early, grab some food and drinks, so you can settle in for an inspiring night at the movies.
Saturday is the festival’s main event—an outdoor short film festival under the stars at Sturt Park. From 6pm, the park will be filled with markets, food stalls, and live entertainment, setting the stage for the big-screen action at 7pm. Twelve shortlisted films will compete for cash prizes, judged live by a panel of industry experts. First place takes home $1,000, while other prizes include awards for emerging filmmakers. With a mix of genres and fresh storytelling, it’s a chance to experience some of Australia’s most exciting short films in a unique setting.
For those keen to get behind the camera themselves, Sunday’s Acting & Filmmaking Workshop at the Civic Centre is the perfect way to round out the weekend. Running from 10am to 2pm, this free session offers hands-on experience and industry insights. Bookings are essential, so if you’re eager to learn from the pros, secure your spot by emailing [email protected].
Founded in 2011 by actor and filmmaker Steve Bastoni, the Perfect Light Film Festival has become a must-visit event for movie lovers and creatives. Bastoni, best known for his roles in Police Rescue, Blue Murder, The Water Diviner, and Underbelly, has built a career both in front of and behind the camera, bringing his industry expertise to this unique festival. Whether you’re there to watch, network, or learn the tricks of the trade, it’s an incredible weekend celebrating storytelling in the heart of the outback.
