CFS Firey Women workshops offer free, practical skills to protect families and property
In the wake of the devastating Black Tuesday bushfires on the Eyre Peninsula back in 2005, nine lives were lost. Countless others changed forever, so the SA Country Fire Service (CFS) asked the hard questions, discovering that women and children were disproportionately represented in the fatalities. Many women were left to defend homes, families, and animals without the know-how or support to do so safely.
Out of that tragedy came the Firey Women Workshop program.
Backed by solid research and shaped by real experience, these free workshops are designed to give women the practical skills, tools and confidence to protect themselves, their families, and their properties during bushfire emergencies.
From understanding fire behaviour to making tough calls under pressure, these sessions cover:
-
The realities of bushfire behaviour
-
Reading and responding to fire danger ratings and warnings
-
Making decisions: leave early or stay and defend?
-
Developing a personalised Bushfire Survival Plan
-
Emotional and physical preparedness
-
Preventing injury in high-stress situations
-
Assembling survival kits
-
Identifying hazards in and around the home
-
Hands-on experience with pumps and firefighting equipment
And now, Fiery Women is coming to Manoora.
