Car quiz: South Aussie Fun Facts

Abbie Tiller

Five SA Fun Facts to add to the Family Car Quiz

My kids love the tradition of breaking a long-haul family road trip up with a completely competitive Car Quiz.
Mum’s the quick-witted Quiz Master, it’s an educational bag of fun and laughs while it lasts, and it almost always leads to an argument, calling for time out, headphones and a brief moment of shush for the adults.

These school holidays I’m adding some South Aussie fun facts to the Quiz Master’s repertoire.

Check them out, join the Car Quiz and you might even learn something yourself!

1) Which is the largest lake in Australia?

(Tip – You could even try a multiple choice answer for this one!)
a) Lake Bumbunga
b) Lake Disappointment
c) Lake Eyre ✅

Not only does SA have its share of Insta worthy pink salt lakes, it’s also home to Lake Eyre, the largest lake in Australia.
Nine thousand and seven hundred square kilometres, Lake Eyre it is the fourth largest lake in the world.
Typically a dry dry basin, in an arid part of Australia, Lake Eyre is currently filling with water due to cyclonic rains earlier this year, but generally only fills to capacity (or near capacity) twice a century. No wonder the tourists are flocking to the outback this Winter!

2) What iconic SA drink is more popular than Coca Cola

“It’s a Farmers Union Iced Coffee, or it’s nothing!” – South Aussies love their coffee cold and served up in a cardboard carton. The iconic milk drink outsells the universally popular fizzy drink, making SA one of the only places on the planet where the local drink is more popular than Coca Cola.

Back in 2003, Australians consumed in excess of 22 million litres of FUIC, which originally hailed from the Mid North town of Jamestown.

Jason “Moose” Elliott takes photos of his FUIC each day and sends them through to Farmers Union!

3) Which SA town is known as “The Opal City”

Coober Pedy in the State’s far north produces 70 per cent of the entire world’s opal supply. The name Coober Pedy is Aboriginal for “white men in a hole” – as many residents live underground to escape the harsh Summer heat and cold Winter nights.

4) Where is the biggest cattle station in the world?

South Australia’s Anna Creek Station, 160km from Coober Pedy, is bigger than Israel, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Malta and is eight times the size of the biggest ranch in the USA.

The enormous working cattle station is 5.851 million acres, or 23,677 square kilometres!

5) What is the highest recorded temperature in Australia?

a) 47.4°C
b) 50.7°C ✅
c) 45.6°C

The highest recorded temperature in Australia was in 1960 in Oodnadatta, South Australia, when the temperature reached 50.7°C.

Enjoy your SA road trip!
