Streaky Bay is officially back in the saddle, with bulls, broncs and barrel racing bound for the bay in October, for the return of Rodeo by the Sea.

The event, which was a finalist in the SA Tourism Award in 2022, is set to be bigger and better than ever, with competitors from all over Australia heading to Streaky, to kick-up some daredevil dust.

A family-friendly affair, the whole crew can get in on a day of adrenaline-pumping rodeo action, amusements for the kids, a range of retail vendors and full catering and bar facilities to keep you fuelled and hydrated.

And speaking of fuel, there are some mouthwatering food options available.  You won’t want to miss the delectable offerings from Smokey Uppercuts, Whyalla’s premier mobile food vendor, specialising in lip-smacking American BBQ. You can also indulge in treats from Fishfix, Thip Thai and enjoy a hot barista-made coffee from Basil and Belle. For those craving something sweeter, there’ll be Strawberries Galore, and the local Probus club will be serving up their famous cinnamon donuts.

Esteemed stock contractor, Ron Woodall, will be calling the shots backstage. The 80-year-old has been running rodeos for 50 years, and as well as hauling the prized stock, it will be a family affair for Woodall – with three generations taking part in the Rodeo action.

The October 21 event is backed by Rodeo Services Australia, with an amazing show of support from sponsors, including major sponsor Nutrient West Coast Ag.

All the action will be live on a big screen, so it won’t matter where you’re perched, and to make life easier, you can even jump onboard a shuttle bus, which will run from Streaky Bay Hotel and deliver Rodeo-goers to the heart-pumping action at Streaky Bay Racecourse.

Rodeo By The Sea President, Lyn Finch, said the event was a great opportunity for the small Eyre Peninsula farming community.

“We love to host the event because it’s great for the social and economic vibrancy of our local community.

“It provides an opportunity for local vendors and accomodation places, people stop to refuel and buy some food. It’s a great way to showcase Streaky Bay.”

As well as economic and social spin offs for the town, Rodeo By The Sea also makes a donation from the event to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which Lyn said “benefits the whole Rodeo community”.

The volunteer committee is passionate about ensuring the event remained an affordable day out for everyone, with tickets priced to sell and no hefty inflation on food and beverages once inside the gates.
