Barrel racing comp in remembrance of Mundulla mates

Abbie Tiller

The South East community of Mundulla will come together on February 28, with a special action-packed barrel racing event in memory of two horse -loving young ladies whose lives were tragically cut short.

Rachel Harris and Macey Inglis died in separate vehicle accidents, rocking the close-knit community.

Rachel was just 17 in December 2020 when she called her parents, Stuart and Anna, to let them know she was on her way home from work. She never made it home, and sadly her dad, a local CFS volunteer was one of the first people on the scene of her horrific accident.

Then in 2023, Macey, who had felt the pain of her friend’s death, was on her way home to Bordertown when tragedy struck for the Inglis family. The blonde haired, blue eyed 20-year-old didn’t get to ride in the upcoming Penola Rodeo as planned, the rodeo community honouring her with a special tribute.

Macey had already made her mark in the senior barrel racing ranks. Both girls carried a deep love for horses and their community.

February’s Mundulla Memorial Barrel Racing Competition will include a junior race dedicated to Rachel Harris, a senior race honouring Macey Inglis and an encouragement race, celebrating the resilient spirit of the local community.

With over 80 entrants expected, the night promises to be a heartfelt gathering of friends, family, and neighbors. Entry is free and attendees can enjoy a meal and a drink while cheering on riders under the summer evening sky.

The event falls on the eve of the Mundulla Show, making it the perfect way to kick off a weekend that reflects some of the girls’ favourite things –  horses, community, and joy.

There’s some great prize money up for grabs for riders. Join the fun, celebrate the legacies of two fun-loving girls taken too soon, share a laugh, raise a glass and enjoy some live music.
