Multi-Million Dollar Redevelopment to Transform Lyndoch Recreation Park

The Barossa Valley is about to become a major South Australian sporting hub thanks to a multi-million dollar redevelopment project at Lyndoch Recreation Park.

Mayor Bim Lange said Barossa Park was on track to become a new home for major events in South Australia, kicking off with the inaugural Barossa AFL Gather Round, which has been locked in for 10-13 April 2025. “It’s terrific to see work is well underway on our AFL oval, which is inspired by ‘the hill’ at iconic Adelaide Oval,” Mayor Lange said. “Built to full AFL specifications with 750 lux lighting, it really will have the best view in the house.”

Beyond the Field

But this isn’t just about elite athletes. The vision is much bigger. A valued community space, the Barossa Park Project will boast not only a top-tier AFL oval but also a second, multi-use oval with 100 lux lights perfect for local sports, dog walking, or athletics training on the new track. Netball courts, a playground, a family garden, shelters, and beautiful landscaping are all on the cards, making this a destination for families as well as sports lovers.

“Work is also advancing rapidly on the main two-storey facility, which will be complemented by a new event pavilion to service the main oval. Along with beautiful architecture, this facility will incorporate clever design principles and energy-efficient systems, which is going to be another drawcard for visitors who care about sustainable tourism,” Mayor Lange added.

Benefits for all

The Barossa District Football and Netball Club is a key partner, contributing $300,000 and relocating to Lyndoch when the facility opens in 2025. This partnership between the Barossa Council and the SA government goes beyond just sports, with the new precinct designed to host major arts festivals and community events. Economic modelling predicts the project will boost tourism by an estimated 18,000 visitor stays each year.

“Access, parking, and traffic have all been addressed through the planning approval processes. Comprehensive plans for each specific major event will be developed by the State Government, to minimise disruption and deliver a great experience, as has been successfully done across previous Gather Rounds,” Mayor Lange noted.

While some residents have raised concerns about access, parking, and potential council rate hikes, the Barossa Park Project is built for the long term. Similar concerns were voiced about the Adelaide Oval redevelopment in 2014, but that project has become a resounding success, attracting record crowds and hosting a variety of events beyond just sports. The Barossa Park Project looks set to follow a similar trajectory, becoming a major drawcard for the Barossa Valley region.

With the upcoming Concordia residential development set to bring 10,000 new homes and potentially 30,000 residents to the Barossa, the Barossa Park Project is perfectly positioned to cater to this growing community. This is an investment in the future ensuring there’s a world-class facility for residents and visitors to enjoy for generations to come.
