New Monarto Plant and Headquarter relocation signals Balco’s bold Global expansion
Balco Australia has announced a major expansion with plans to build a new hay processing plant at Monarto in the state’s Murray Mallee region. This will be the company’s fourth processing facility, reinforcing its position as one of the largest exporters of oaten hay in the country.
As part of this growth phase, Balco will also be relocating its head office from Balaklava to Adelaide, consolidating its operations to better serve both local and global markets. However, the company reassures its commitment to the Balaklava community, where it has had deep roots for over three decades.
“We’re in the midst of a major growth phase,” said Balco Australia CEO Rob Lawson. “There is strong demand for high-quality Australian hay across the world, and we’re looking to capitalise on the opportunity.”
This year, Balco aims to sell 270,000 tonnes of oaten hay, up from 190,000 tonnes last year, with plans to expand further. “With the addition of the Monarto facility and the continued expansion of our existing plants, our future annual processing capacity will extend to 400,000 tonnes,” Lawson said.
The new Monarto plant, situated on a 157-hectare greenfield site, is expected to become operational within two years. This facility will add 100,000 tonnes to Balco’s processing capacity and create local jobs. “We’re excited about the potential this plant brings, especially for growers in the South East,” Lawson added.
Balco moves Headquarters to Adelaide, but Balaklava Community stays in focus
While Balco’s head office will transition from Balaklava to Adelaide, the company remains dedicated to the region. “Our bond with the Balaklava community is as strong as ever,” Lawson said. “Our field teams will continue working closely with local growers, and we’re expanding our Bowmans office to ensure a seamless transition.”
Most of the 20 staff currently working in the Balaklava building will be supported in relocating to either the new Adelaide office, or the nearby Bowmans facility.
A small number of Balaklava-based positions are expected to be made redundant with those staff impacted to receive their full entitlements and support.
Balco is also looking at ways to ensure the Balaklava office building continues to serve the community, alongside its ongoing support of local events, sporting teams, and charitable groups and continue to play an active role in the Balaklava community, just as it has for the past 34 years.
